Transportation

The first trial train transporting fresh produce from Spain into the Netherlands departs next month to officially test the new Easyfresh Express rail service. Fruit and vegetable cargo will be onboard as part of the inaugural pilot journey which marks the entrance of Easyfresh Express, forecast to disrupt the transportation of perishables around Europe. The units match the capacity of the usual reefer trucks, which normally carry Spanish fresh produce from the Southeast Iberian Peninsula to all of Europe, according to Frigobreda commercial director, Rainier Wolsleger, who is also the regional manager for Easyfresh Logistics.

Hopefully they will embrace it as well. We are not only offering railhead to railhead, we are able to deliver the full range of services, including cold storage and pallet distribution. But also we can reach Scandinavia and next to that we also have the possibility to bring the unit into Rotterdam and take up other options from there.

The reefer container train can handle all types of perishables with a range of chill and freeze solutions. The service - which opens up opportunities for Spanish growers and exporters across a range of produce, as well as offering a carbon-friendly alternative - is expected to be fully operational by the autumn. Then there is also a large production of melon.

We can load all of the different fruit and veg commodities which would require this service. In terms of the return journey back to Spain, the train could either be loaded with perishables or any other type of non-hazardous cargo that does not necessarily have to be temperature-controlled.

When PBUK asked if Brexit could pose any challenges down the line, Wolsleger was philosophical believing that whatever customs regulations would apply to the rail service, would be the same for competitors. One way or another I doubt if the people of the UK will not eat, so in that respect I believe the cargo will always find a way. When you compare truck and rail transportation it would be equal from that respect.

Double-digit higher truck rates mark US produce season start

Effective packaging of produce is critical to protecting product quality during transport and in store aisles. The type of packaging selected depends on the product type and what will work best to enclose the product and provide the best means of handling. Packaging must be designed to effectively withstand various conditions in the supply chain: rough handling during loading and unloading, compression from weight that may bear down from other containers if double-stacked , impact and shifting during transportation, and the high humidity that can occur during pre-cooling, transit and storage. Having a good understanding of all areas of packaging is key in selecting the appropriate kind for the product being shipped and for effective handling during transit. The Red Book Credit Services is a great resource for educating stakeholders on this topic.

US truck prices to transport fruits and vegetables from Mexico and California are up 20 to 30 percent compared with a year ago, mirroring the rates in other modes too. Even so, the purchasers of transportation are opening their wallets and riding out the inflation until the macroeconomic environment changes. California Agriculture 72 4 Moving perishable produce by rail, rather than by truck, could provide significant benefits for Californians. Railroads have long been an important component of California's freight transportation network. For perishable produce in particular, the rail industry dominated until — but between and , trucking took over.

Food loss is a serious issue in the United States. It affects all aspects of the supply chain, from farmers to consumers. While much is already known about loss at the consumer level, our understanding of the amount of food that never makes it to this stage is more limited.

Shipping Fresh Produce: What You Need to Know

A standard container, left, versus a hi-cube on right photo supplied by Mike Walwyn. The Department of Transport had earlier given a commitment to the industry that it would extend the moratorium for a ninth year, while the impact of hi-cubes was again studied, but nothing to that effect was gazetted before the expiry date of the previous moratorium, 31 December The fruit industry experiences a significant increase in table grape export volumes during this time of the year, entering the peak export period between the beginning of January and roughly the first week of March. The extension should have been signed off by his director-general, Alec Moemi, but the latter is still on leave. At least, industry notes, there have been no reports of trucks pulled over for carrying a hi-cube container.

Produce Business

Shipping fresh produce is a high-paced industry because of the effort it takes to make deliveries within a short timeframe. There is a lot to coordinate to make sure everything shows fresh and ready for consumers. If a shipment pickup time or delivery schedule is late, it means a day or more of freshness is lost. When shipping fresh produce, the objective from start to finish is to move fresh produce quickly and safely. However, there is a lot to know about how it all happens including proper temperatures, what crops are growing when and where everything is heading once loaded on a truck. Produce is sensitive freight due to the varying items and the individual shelf life timelines. The same applies when you are learning how to transport ice cream.

Produce transportation has entered the information age, and although only a minority of fruits and vegetables are closely monitored in transit now, that is the future. Telephone calls have become an antiquated method of transmitting the story of fruits and vegetables as they are trucked across the country.
