A potentiometer is a three- terminal resistor with a sliding or rotating contact that forms an adjustable voltage divider. The measuring instrument called a potentiometer is essentially a voltage divider used for measuring electric potential voltage ; the component is an implementation of the same principle, hence its name. Potentiometers are commonly used to control electrical devices such as volume controls on audio equipment. Potentiometers operated by a mechanism can be used as position transducers , for example, in a joystick. Potentiometers are rarely used to directly control significant power more than a watt , since the power dissipated in the potentiometer would be comparable to the power in the controlled load. There are a number of terms in the electronics industry used to describe certain types of potentiometers:.

Vishay SferniceVIDEO ON THE TOPIC: Equivalent Resistance of a Cube (Between the Space Diagonal)
A solution is presented that dispenses with the use of potentiometers in order to be able to carry out measurements even in very small installation spaces. But more practical and detailed tests are needed to validate the system. Both in the area of vertical takeoff and landing aircrafts as well as in the area of horizontally takeoff and landing aircrafts. But this also means that this system must be tested in order to make it safe for the operation in an UAV or an SFT vehicle.
One of these important parameters is the control surface deflection angle. The control surface deflection angle should be measured both, on the ground and as well as in flight, in order to make this parameter available to the DFCS, to the telemetry system and to the ground control station during flight tests via telemetry system.
Here, the resistor is mechanically connected to the control surface and movements of the control surface lead to a change in the value of the variable resistor. A connected voltage then changes equal to the variable resistor value and the emitted voltage corresponds to the control surface deflection angle.
The installation space in a wing or a horizontal stabilizer of a small UAV is often simply too small for a potentiometer. It is also important to mention that the friction of a variable resistor, can lead to the obstruction of the control surface movement.
Whereas this is hardly significant in a manned aircraft, this can be of great importance to a small UAV. For a long time, the project flight test service was looking for a solution to replace variable resistors. The solution was found in form of a Hall-sensor module. These sensor modules are delivered by a large online retailer, are relatively inexpensive and the necessary electronics are send in one package. One of such commercial off-the-shelf modules is shown in Figure 1 below.
The KY module has the dimensions of 42x15x14mm and the module is operated with a DC voltage of 5 volts. The hall-sensor is located on the far right of the board. It reacts to a magnetic field of a small permanent magnet Diameter 3 mm and provides an analog output voltage, like a potentiometer, depending on the angle of the magnet to the sensor.
This principal permits the measurement of control surface deflection angles, when the sensor and the magnet are mounted in the required place. To do this, the sensor must first be removed from the board and then be reconnected to the board with thin cables. Please see figure 2 below. Now the connections for the supply voltage and the analog output voltage, on the right hand- side of the module, must be provided with cables.
Please see figure 3 below. Leonhardt The module prepared in this way is now ready for installation in a wing or a horizontal stabilizer. It is important that the sensor is positioned precisely to enable an accurate measurement. The sensor is installed in the aileron spar of the wing and the board in a wing section.
The permanent magnet is positioned in the leading-edge of the aileron so that it is installed exactly opposite the sensor. The installation principle is shown in the next figure.
Please see figure 4. In the case of practical use, the installation of the components in a wing is presented in the next figure. Please see the following image.
This sensor can detect and send the analog output voltage of the hall sensor module to a telemetry system. The sensed data can then be visualized by a PC program. An example of the visualization is given in the next figure. Please see the graph in figure 6 below. A voltage of 2. In the case shown, the aileron was moved not with an actuator but by hand, so the curve may become a little angular. For this first test, however, the results were quite satisfactory, and the author is sure that the system can do its job.
A more detailed ground and flight test of the system will take place this autumn. These tests are required to verify the accuracy and reliability of the system. The aircraft selected for these tests is equipped with six KY modules. Please see figures 7 and 8 below. In this Issue — September 12th September In this Issue — June 9th June About Author. Resistors are elements of electrical circuits that resist and reduce the flow of current through the electrical circuit. They can also be used to provide specific voltages to active components. Resistors are available with fixed or variable resistance values. Fixed resistors are ones in which resistance never changes.
The technological accomplishments of JRM continue to diverge into challenging to a new fields, expanding markets and development fields while providing products to broad fields such as electricity, household electric appliances, communications and industrial machines. We have established production footholds at home and abroad mainly for manufacturing wire-wound resistors and shunt resistors for detecting current, compact resistors for preventing noise of power sources, as well as large resistors with high radiation performance, and we are well prepared to meet the various needs in development, manufacturing and sales from public welfare use to industrial use. We have also developed laminated heaters of a slim, flexible type which are adaptable to various designs such as household appliances, medical equipment and other industrial uses, utilizing their simple and effective characteristics freely. Position sensors, making full use of our printing technology, have achieved long-standing results, mainly for detecting the angles of automotive air conditioners.

In a previous article, we discussed various types of fixed resistors, selection of resistor type for a given circuit, and identifying value, tolerance and power rating of fixed resistors. The resistance of variable resistors can be adjusted manually or digitally. The variable resistors offer a range of resistance instead of a fixed resistance that can be either controlled through linear or rotary motion otherwise digitally. The variable resistors which are used for varying voltage division are called potentiometers.SEE VIDEO BY TOPIC: How Does a Volume Control (Potentiometer/Variable Resistor) Work?
A resistor is a passive two-terminal electrical component that implements electrical resistance as a circuit element. In electronic circuits, resistors are used to reduce current flow, adjust signal levels, to divide voltages, bias active elements, and terminate transmission lines , among other uses. High-power resistors that can dissipate many watts of electrical power as heat, may be used as part of motor controls, in power distribution systems, or as test loads for generators. Fixed resistors have resistances that only change slightly with temperature, time or operating voltage. Variable resistors can be used to adjust circuit elements such as a volume control or a lamp dimmer , or as sensing devices for heat, light, humidity, force, or chemical activity. Resistors are common elements of electrical networks and electronic circuits and are ubiquitous in electronic equipment. Practical resistors as discrete components can be composed of various compounds and forms. Resistors are also implemented within integrated circuits.

How To Set Up A Business Unit For Wirewound Resistors Manufacturing
Potentiometers are electromechanical components and therefore exposed not only to the weaknesses of fixed resistors but also to all the failure possibilities of electromechanics. The reliability is comparatively poor. It will be even lower if we try to tool the shafts for our own special applications!! Figure 1. Definition of electrical and mechanical travel etc. Between the two fixed terminals, there is a third one connected to a sliding contact or Wiper. Because the direction of motion of the sliding contact is hidden in encapsulated types the fixed terminals usually are marked with. In non-wirewounds, the shaft shall be positioned at either of the theoretical endpoints, i. Precision wirewound potentiometers have terminations like the one in Figure 2.
The Sfernice name has been well known throughout Europe and beyond for many years. Today, Vishay Sfernice products include resistors, variable resistors, and motion transducers.
Resistors are the most commonly used components in electronic circuits and devices. The main purpose of a resistor is to maintain specified values of voltage and current in an electronic circuit. The unit of resistance is Ohm. The Ohm symbol shows resistance in a circuit from the name Geog Ohm — a German physicist who invented it.
Increasing demand for electronic devices and equipment is driving the increasing growth of the wirewound resistors market. Wirewound resistor is a type of passive component in which metal wires are used to reduce or restrict the flow of electric current to a certain level.
