Polymer Latices pp Cite as. The purpose of this chapter is to review some of the more important compounding ingredients which may find their way into latex compounds. There are a large number of such materials. It is not possible to describe them all in detail here; all that is possible is to give a broad classification of latex compounding materials, and to describe the more important representatives of each class.
The emphasis is primarily upon compounding ingredients for rubber latices. This is because the compounding of rubber latices is generally rather more complex and critical than is that of latices of glassy polymers, principally because of the need to incorporate vulcanizing ingredients in the former.

This updated version provides an in-depth range of information for both institutions and individuals caring for collections. As such the layout and content was designed with these client groups in mind and it was not intended to be the definitive conservation manual. The publication was concerned specifically with the objects and images found in the targeted collections and did not attempt to comment on or categorise heritage sites or buildings. This revised edition builds on the first, with revised content and updated information, particularly with respect to recommendations regarding environmental parameters best suited for particular material types. Over the nearly 20 years since the original publication there have been considerable advances made in the materials conservation area, most notably in the scientific analysis of materials and the application of sophisticated treatment techniques. Unfortunately many of these recent advances in the profession are expensive to access and require highly sophisticated equipment and expertise, limiting their use to larger institutions. Thus many new techniques cannot be applied by general collectors and small institutions. For this reason, the focus of this revised edition has remained on practices and techniques that are simpler and more generally accessible.

Rubber cement is an adhesive made from elastic polymers typically latex mixed in a solvent such as acetone , hexane , heptane or toluene to keep them fluid enough to be used. This makes it part of the class of drying adhesives : as the solvents quickly evaporate, the rubber solidifies, forming a strong yet flexible bond. Rubber cement is simply a mixture of solid rubber in a volatile solvent that will dissolve it. When the cement is applied, the solvent evaporates, leaving the rubber as the adhesive. Almost any rubber pre- vulcanized or not can be used. Early solvents used included chloroform and benzene. In the United States of America, current formulations include n-heptane. In the UK, a product called Marabu-Fixogum uses acetone. Rubber cement is favoured in handicrafts applications, where easy and damage-free removal of adhesive is desired. For example, rubber cement is used as the marking fluid in erasable pens.
More particularly, the present invention relates to compositions and methods of manufacturing lime pellets, and methods of using lime pellets in asphalt manufacturing and paving. Typically, an asphalt pavement includes an aggregate and asphalt cement mixed together in what is commonly referred to as hot mix asphalt HMA. The asphalt cement is a hydrocarbon-rich substance such as, or prepared from, bitumen, and is used to bind the aggregate into a pavement. The type and amount of aggregate can vary, and it provides structural reinforcement and durability to the HMA. While the asphalt cement functions as a continuous phase that binds the aggregate materials together, it is well known that various additives such as lime can be used to improve the durability and longevity of asphalt pavements. Such improvements have included anti-strip characteristics and reduced deformation or softening of the asphalt pavement over time. These improvements have been obtained by either combining the lime fines with the aggregate or with the asphalt cement before the aggregate and asphalt cement have been prepared into hot mix asphalt. More particularly, the powdered lime can be supplied by inline injection, or bulk dumping. While favorable asphalt pavement characteristics can be obtained by the current methodologies, problems have arisen from the lime fines clumping or becoming airborne, which jeopardizes the ability to accurately measure or control the amount of lime being used. People working directly with the lime mixing process, as well as those in surrounding areas, have been exposed to the airborne lime fines that travel throughout a processing or construction site.
